Exciting Summer Youth Programs in our Community

Several new camps and programs have been added for Summer 2010! Please register now, as spaces are going very fast.
Our goal is to provide recreational opportunities for youth within our communities that are affordable and have flexible scheduling options. We use instructors that are certified and recognized within the City of Calgary, and we employ youth to help run the camps. And our camp fees are budget-sensitive!

NEW – Fine Arts Camps

Strathcona Community Centre – 277 Strathcona Drive SW
The fine arts camp week will include exploration in painting, clay, music and drama. Each day will include a variety of art experiences. The focus will always be on fun and discovering skills in a enthusiastic environment.
Applicants need to be motivated and cooperative, able to practice various art forms.
We reserve the right to decline unsuitable applicants.
Megan Hodgson is a University of Calgary Student. She has played roles in two musicals: “West Side Story” and “Miss Saigon”. She is currently a member of three choirs. Her passion is in the arts, including visual, drama and music.
NEW – Mad Science Camps
Westhills Community Sports is pleased to announce its new Mad Science Camps, instructed by Mad Science of Southern Alberta.
Mad Science of Southern Alberta offers a large selection of after-school programs, workshops for preschoolers through Grade Six, special events, and award winning birthday parties and summer camps. From entertaining educational programs to educational entertainment, Mad Science sparks imaginative learning.
Camps are running July 19-23 and August 9-13 (Mon-Fri) at the SCA Communtiy Center (277 Strathcona Drive SW)
LITTLE SECRET AGENT LAB
Look out CSI – it’s the Mad Science Little Secret Agent Lab!!Campers go undercover and explore what it takes to be a Secret Agent in our NEW ½ day morning camp. Everyday will be based on a different theme: Discover Detection, Sleuths on the Scene, Crime Lab, Funky Forensics & the Science of Security and as always will have campers involved in loads of fun hands-on activities.Everyday would also include a cool Mad Science branded take-home project relevant to that day’s activities.

JUNIOR MAD SCIENTISTS
This awesome ALL NEW ½ day afternoon camp gives campers ages 5 – 7 the option of attending a full day as it is completely different from our morning camp.Each day is just as fun-filled with hands-on activities and includes themes such as Busy Builders, Terrific Toys, Awesome Animals, Our Big Blue Planet & Radical Robots.Everyday includes a cool Mad Science branded take-home project relevant to that days theme and each camper will build and keep their very own operational robot!
Ages 5 – 7

NEW – Boot Camps for Adults/Youth
Whether you are new to fitness – recovering from an injury – looking for a change in your regular workout…we have workouts to suit your needs.
Our Boot Camps are total body workouts which are fun, motivating, challenging…and you will enjoy the benefits of losing weight as well.
Our sessions consist of…
- Circuit Training – a combination of high-intensity aerobics and resistance training. The focus is on weight loss, increasing strength and cardiovascular fitness
- Strength Training – which is primarily an anaerobic activity, however – we will be using it in combination with our circuit training. The benefits are…an increase in bone density, improved metabolism and more flexible joints
- Core Stability – with sufficient core stability. You will experience – less lower back pain, improved posture and stronger hips
- Nutritional guidance – we will provide appropriate tips for safe weight loss – by informing you of what and when to eat specific foods
The results that you are looking for will depend on the level of effort that you put into each class.

The summer sessions run at the same time as the Sport Conditioning Camps… making it convenient when you are dropping off or picking up your child. Each session is 1-hour in duration. No matter your age – shape or fitness level…we will guarantee you a great workout.

My name is Glenn Vergie and together, my team and I have been providing fitness training to young athletes since 1999. We have learned from the best in the industry and have impacted over 7000 athletes. This has given us thousands of hours to master the skills involved in improving speed and quickness. We have developed a program that is unique and proven to help every child get faster…so they can enjoy the sport they love.
Our team of passionate and exceptional fitness coaches – are far better than your average personal trainer. All of our male and female fitness coaches have or are currently pursuing Kinesiology degrees. Therefore we have the knowledge to teach drills that are geared specifically to improve sport performance. Speed can be learned – but it needs to be worked on. We will review, analyze, and breakdown your child’s every movement. It is virtually a guarantee that after our sessions, they will improve their ability to move quicker and more explosively.

Sport Conditioning Camps are held on the John Costello Field.
Note…Pick up and drop off will be from the Strathcona Community Centre (277 Strathcona Drive SW). This facility will also be used for lunchtime and bathroom breaks.
The participant to instructor ratio is approximately 10:1
Basketball
For kids ages 6-14. Come get a jump on your basketball skills. Our basketball camps are held at a gymnasium in the Strathcona area and are running these weeks:

1:00 pm to 4:00 pm ages 11 – 14 years
The Program fee is $130.00

The camps are run by certified instructor Stephen Anthony of 3Pt Sports. Stephen’s extensive background and passion for the game combine in his excellent ability to develop young athletes. The Program focuses on fundamental development in a fun and safe environment and provides high-level coaching and training for athletes looking to advance their game.
Soccer
For kids ages 6-8 (half-day) and kids ages 8-16 (half or full-day options). Our popular soccer program will be once again running at John Costello School Fields and are running the following weeks:

The camps are run by certified instructor Chris Haygarov. Chris has 20 years experience as a professional soccer trainer and mentors two U17 Canadian National Women’s Team players. He has run soccer camps at the SCA for many years. The program focus is on developing individual skills: dribbling, passing, shooting, and juggling. Group and team tactics will also be taught. Both male and female trainers will be working with the participants. An indoor location will be used for drop-off, pick-up, lunchtime and bathroom breaks. Tennis
For kids ages 4-17. Lessons are held on the Christie Courts and include instruction and prizes! Spare tennis rackets are available. Instructor Simon Harvie has taught lessons for the SCA for more than half a decade, and has won rave reviews and recommendations from the many returning players and parents. Youth Athletic Development
Take your sport performance to the next level. Learning the right athletic skills will prepare your child for success in sports. This camp will focus on teaching speed, agility, strength, reaction time, coordination, and proper movement mechanics for sports. These skills will be taught from high-level instructors with education in skill acquisition and experience in competitive sports. The camp is designed to develop your child’s athletic potential, while proving that fitness can be fun! The investment in your child’s future is $105/week.
Camps are running the following weeks:
- July 19-23, 1:00-4:00pm
- July 26-30, 9:00am-12:00pm
The camps are run by Lisa Marescaux, a clinical exercise specialist with the American College of Sports Medicine, with a degree in Kinesiology from the University of Alberta.
